This morning marked a heartfelt farewell to Robin, Jonas, and Julia, the final trio of Welwarts Play Handball volunteers who have spent the past year making a profound impact on youth sports development in Kenya.
Robin and Jonas, in particular, left an indelible mark by strengthening handball programming at Githunguri Primary School in Utawala, Machakos County. Their dedication not only elevated the skill level and enthusiasm of young players but also laid the groundwork for a sustainable sports culture within the school.
Beyond Utawala, their efforts extended into the heart of Nairobi’s informal settlements. In Mathare, they initiated handball activities that sparked a wave of excitement and engagement among local youth. Their work at Ruai Girls Secondary School further expanded the reach of the sport, empowering young women through teamwork, discipline, and athletic excellence.
One of the most inspiring outcomes of their mission was the birth of Mathare Phoenix a vibrant new handball team that symbolizes resilience, hope, and the power of sport to transform lives. Mathare Phoenix is more than just a team; it’s a movement that will continue to grow, fueled by the passion and groundwork laid by these incredible volunteers.
Julia, too, played a vital role in community engagement and youth mentorship, contributing to the holistic development of youth in Juja, under the Pendo Amani Youth Organization (PAYO).
As we bid them farewell, we celebrate not just their departure, but the legacy they leave behind. Their journey reminds us that when youth are empowered through sport, entire communities rise.
Thank you, Robin, Jonas, and Julia. Your footprints will guide many more to follow.
